Ready-fire-aim instead of ready-aim-fire, if you know what I mean. In this section, Paul is telling us the judgmental spirit in the self-absorbed moralist pushes us as far away from God as the one who is shamelessly immoral (Chapter 1). In it Paul shares with them the heart of the most important message ever shared, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We can easily think this letter is a theological tome and miss the intimacy with which Paul writes to a church existing in the shadow of a mighty pagan empire. This year we’ll see Paul’s heart for God and his love for the Church, there in Rome and for all time.
